Qualities vs. Functionality

Think of how lovely it might be if from time to time we named things by their qualities instead of their function.  For instance, Krung Thep, which translates as, ‘City of Angels’, and is more commonly known as Bankok, which translates as, ‘Village of Wild Plums’, has an even more descriptive name.

Imagine if instead of saying you visited Bankok (which ends in that hard consonant ‘k’), you took the time to say: “I was graciously welcomed into the City of Gods, the Great City, the Residence of the Emerald Buddha, the Impregnable City of Ayutthaya, of God Indra, the Grand Capital of the World Endowed with Nine Precious Gems, the Happy City Abounding in Enormous Royal Palaces Which Resemble the Heavenly Abode Wherein Dwell the Reincarnated Gods, a City Given by Indra and Built by Vishnukarm.”

Besides raising a few eyebrows, and maybe impressing your friends, it might just bring the world to a sublime stillness, even if for only a few moments, while uncovering some hidden truths.
